Why your AliExpress cart and your bank statement disagree

AliExpress's checkout typically does show shipping and a "tax" line, but the tax is often only the VAT collected via IOSS — not any potential customs duty if your order is over the de minimis threshold.

The formula

subtotal_local = (item + shipping) × FX rate
duty           = subtotal × duty rate, only if subtotal > deMinimis
VAT (extra)    = (subtotal + duty) × VAT rate, ONLY if not already collected at checkout
total landed   = subtotal + duty + VAT (extra)

When AliExpress's checkout tax line is lying to you

For EU orders over €150, IOSS doesn't apply — duty kicks in at the border, and VAT is collected by the courier on top. AliExpress's checkout doesn't warn you. Use this calculator before placing big orders.
