How Etsy's fee stack actually works
Etsy is famously cheap to start selling on, and famously expensive to scale on. That's because four separate fees compound on every sale, and each one is invisible until the math hits.
The formula
listing fee = $0.20 per listing per 4 months
transaction fee = (item + shipping) × 6.5%
payment proc = (item + shipping) × ~3% + ~$0.25
offsite ads = item × 12% (voluntary) or 15% (mandatory if >$10K)
net per sale = item − (all fees) − product cost
Why Offsite Ads is the killer fee
Etsy automatically opts shops into Offsite Ads once they cross $10,000 in trailing 12-month revenue. At that point, every sale Etsy attributes to an offsite ad clicks costs you 15% of the item price — on top of all the other fees. Many sellers don't realize they crossed the threshold until they see a line item on their next statement.
Common fee mistake: forgetting the per-order $0.25
The payment processing fee has both a percentage and a fixed component ($0.25 in the US). On a $5 sticker, that fixed fee is 5% of the entire transaction by itself.
